If there was a place for a rugby fan to take a vacation, then Olney is that destination. The Town has a strong reputation from quality performance of its local teams, and the sport is embedded at multiple levels. With local play enjoying a history dating back to 1877, Olney rugby includes men’s professional, amateur, women’s rugby, children teams, and mini rugby for recreation. Multiple clubs have seasons throughout the year, and Olney even enjoys a faster 7’s tournament in the warmer months.
The above is not to say that Olney residents don’t enjoy other sports as well. The town soccer team is affiliated with the United Counties League and plays under the name Olney town. There is also a junior bracket with 19 local teams from the young U6 level up to U17 performance for both boys and girls.
Finally, cricket teams also get a mention as well, filling in the sport fields of the town when given the chance.
Olney has plenty of other activities for residents and visitors as well. Being next to the River Great Ouse means lots of water activities are available as well. From boating to fishing, there is plenty of warm season opportunity available within walking or cycling distance. Many choose a good cool dunk in the water with swimming and laying in the sun. However, the adventurous water types even enjoy windsurfing in the area. The surrounding countryside also gives plenty of paths for day-hiking and forest walks as well. Even horseriders can find resources and outlet for a day’s trot in the greater region.
And the natural outings in the area are not enough, Olney is home to Xscape, a mega complex dedicated to indoor tobogganing and skiing among other things. The center also provides bowling, simulated rock-climbing and fake skydiving as well.
Finally, at a slower pace, multiple golf courses are within a short distance from Olney, serving the greater triangle area of Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire.
